The Three-Volume Set “Mathematical Elasticity”

A three-volume set of “Mathematical Elasticity” by Professor Philippe G. Ciarlet, a Senior Fellow of Hong Kong Institute for Advanced Study at City University of Hong Kong (CityU), will be published by the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) in 2022.

This three-volume treatise is an updated version of the well-regarded books written by Professor Ciarlet. The three-volume set, including Volume I: Three-Dimensional Elasticity, Volume II: Theory of Plates, and Volume III: Theory of Shells. Each one of the three volumes is self-contained, together with the Mathematical Elasticity set:

  • provides the only modern treatise on elasticity;
  • introduces contemporary research on three-dimensional elasticity, the theory of plates, and the theory of shells; and
  • contains proofs, detailed surveys of all mathematical prerequisites, and many problems for teaching and self-study.

Professor Ciarlet is an internationally renowned mathematician, particularly for his work in the mathematical analysis of the finite element method and his fundamental contributions to elasticity theory, plate theory, shell theory, and applied differential geometry. He is a University Distinguished Professor at CityU. In addition, he is a member of nine academies, including the French Academy of Sciences, the Academia Europaea, the World Academy of Sciences, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the Hong Kong Academy of Sciences. A Fellow of SIAM and American Mathematical Society. Professor Ciarlet has received numerous awards, including a Grand Prize from the French Academy of Sciences and a Humboldt Research Award. He is Doctor Honoris Causa, or Honorary Professor at 11 universities and the author of 16 books and more than 220 research papers.

SIAM, headquartered in the USA, is a leading international organization of researchers, educators, practitioners, and students whose primary interest is in mathematics and computational science and their applications. SIAM’s mission is to advance and raise awareness about applied mathematics and related fields through its publications, conferences, online resources, programs, and initiatives.
