In memory of Professor Chang Chun-Yen

The Institute for Advanced Study (IAS) is deeply saddened by the passing of Professor Chang Chun-Yen, the Emeritus Senior Fellow of IAS and former President of National Chiao Tung University (NCTU), in Taiwan today.

Professor Chang was the first local PhD graduate of engineering in Taiwan, and the pioneer in the areas of VLSI, Microelectronics, Optoelectronics, and Microwaves. In 1964, Professor Chang established the first Semiconductor Research Center and National Nano Device Laboratories in Taiwan. He was the former President and Professor Emeritus at the NCTU. Besides, he was the Science and Technology Advisor to the President Office and Prime Minister of the Taiwan. Professor Chang was invited to be the Senior Fellow of IAS in 2015 and became the Emeritus Senior Fellow of IAS in 2018.

Professor Chang made many contributions to Taiwan's electronics industry, education and material technology, earning him numerous honors and awards, including member of Academia Sinica and Foreign Member of the US National Academy of Engineering.

Professor Chang will be greatly missed and we offer our deepest condolences to his family.
