IAS Distinguished Lecture Explores a New Generation of Metal String Complexes

Professor Shie-Ming Peng, a renowned pioneer in molecular wire synthetic chemistry, delivered a distinguished lecture titled “From Homonuclear Metal String Complexes to Heteronuclear Metal String Complexes” for the Institute for Advanced Study (IAS) at City University of Hong Kong (CityU) on 30 November 2018.
Professor Shie-Ming Peng, Chair Professor of Chemistry at National Taiwan University, kicked off the lecture by showing a string of “metal string complexes” model. Professor Peng discussed the electronic structure of the simplest trinuclear complexes, the supporting ligand systems, and single molecular conductance of metal string complexes. He emphasized these complexes lead to a new direction in the application of molecular metal wires to the nano-electronics.
In addition, Professor Peng featured the latest development and important results in the newly designed heteronuclear metal string complexes (HMSCs). He concluded that these molecules may be of great interest in studying the nature of heterometallic electronic effects and molecular electronic applications.
The research areas of Professor Peng lie in inorganic chemistry, crystallography and nanoscience. Professor Peng established the first Laboratory for X-Ray Single Crystal Analysis in Taiwan and he has made significant contributions in the areas of metal string complexes and coordination chemistry.
Professor Peng was the Vice President of National Taiwan University. He is the Academician of the Third World Academy of Sciences, member of the Royal Society of Chemistry and Academician of Academia Sinica.
