A finding by Professor Chain-Tsuan Liu and Professor Ke Lu, IAS Senior Fellows and their team was featured on Science. The materials scientists report a strategy to enhance the performance of complex alloys by controllably introducing high-density ductile multicomponent intermetallic nanoparticles (MCINPs) in complex alloy systems. This MCINP strategy offers a paradigm to develop next-generation materials for structural applications.

A finding by Professor TG Nieh, IAS Visiting Professor and his team was featured on Nature. The materials scientists proposed that oxygen can take the form of ordered oxygen complexes, a state in between oxide particles and frequently occurring random interstitials. These results provide insight into the role of interstitial solid solutions and associated ordering strengthening mechanisms in metallic materials.

Professor Park Nam-gyu from the School of Chemical Engineering at Sungkyunkwan University in South Korea delivered the latest installment of the Institute for Advanced Study (IAS) Distinguished Lecture Series at City University Hong Kong on 11 June. At the lecture, titled “Lead Halide Perovskite: Photovoltaics and Beyond”, Professor Park said a universal method and interfacial nano-engineering had been developed to eliminate hysteresis, which is the lag in response exhibited in a body when reacting to forces affecting it.

The 12th Guanghua Engineering Science and Technology Award was awarded on 30 May to IAS Senior Fellow Professor Lu Jian, a materials scientist focusing on structural metallic materials at City University of Hong Kong (CityU). The Guanghua Engineering Science and Technology (EST) Prizes, composed of "Guanghua EST Achievement Award" and "Guanghua EST Award", are regarded as “the most prestigious award for engineering and technology achievement in China”. “I am very honoured to receive this top award in the engineering and technology sector in China,” said Professor Lu, who is also Vice-President (Research and Technology) and Dean of Graduate Studies at CityU.
